STAR PROTOCOL™The STAR Protocol is a reflective observation process. To improve instructional practice, educators need to observe instruction, talk about it, and use structured reflection to build voluntary and internal commitment to change. A typical observation takes about 15 minutes followed by 15 minutes of debriefing where educators See teaching and learning in action, Talk about observations with colleagues using common language, Analyze the observations, and Reflect on their own practice. The central question is “How can I apply what I’ve seen to my own classroom?” inspiring teachers to reflect on instructional practice and plan for pedagogical change.
Together, implementation of Powerful Teaching and Learning and the STAR Protocol occurs through an integrated, multi-year school improvement model designed to build internal capacity and sustain instructional improvement over time. This model combines classroom observation, job-embedded professional learning, executive coaching, facilitator development, structured planning routines, and ongoing PLC support into a coherent system focused on improving teaching and learning. Executive coaching develops administrators as instructional leaders who can guide and monitor implementation while instructional coaching supports educators in translating that understanding into daily practice.
