Thank you so much for your great presentations to the Spanaway Staff. In particular, on January 3rd on our first day back from the holiday. The staff were very excited about the results, and in particular the STAR PROTOCOL as a way to self reflect upon their own educational practice. Yesterday I walked into the 4th grade team working with our Instructional Coach on the identified areas in Thinking and Application. This warmed my heart and gave me hope for the children here at Spanaway.
Duane, the greatest comment you made to this staff was the fact of using the STAR PROTOCOL erases the "POVERTY" label as an excuse for lack of progress. Bells were ringing in my ears when you shared this with the staff. This excuse has been tossed around like "candy" since I have been here at Spanaway and I have felt like I have been swimming up stream to change this systemic issue. I have a sense that this will be the turning point in our work with Common Core, Curriculum, Indistar, No Excuses University, PBIS, and all other district initiatives going on this year.
Once again, thank you for your skill, expertise, knowledge, experience, and credibility with our results, and how to interpret them for use with our improvement plans. My very best to you as you help others on their way to improving education for all of our children.
